We Need More Success Stories Like AbleGamers
Mark Barlet has 25 years of hands-on experience in the tech and assistive technology field. An injured veteran who left the Air Force in 1996, he became trained in assistive technology to support those with disabilities and other challenges.
When his friend was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis almost twenty years ago Barlet started AbleGamers, a nonprofit that provides disabled gamers with assistive technologies in the belief that gaming fosters inclusive communities, combats social isolation, and improves the quality of life for people with disabilities. AbleGamers has many functions, including:
- Peer Counseling
- Engineering Research
- Community & Inclusion
- User Research
- Professional Development
The mission statement of AbleGamers :
Create opportunities that enable play in order to combat social isolation, foster inclusive communities, and improve the quality of life for people with disabilities.
On the AbleGamers website you can find many examples of disabled people who are able to continue gaming thanks to the work of this organization. Their impact statement reads:
With your help, we are working every day to make sure people with disabilities have the same opportunities as everyone else for positive experiences through play. With our nearly two decades as pioneers in inclusive play, thousands of hours working with people with disabilities, leading developers and engineers we create opportunities for players to find inclusive places to play and connect with family and friends.
There is also an annual fundraising event called "Spawn Together" which you can read more about here.
We applaud the work that Mark Barlet and AbleGamers are doing!
